10 Catholic priests accused of sex abuse worked in Northern state

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Sacramento released a list of 46 priests and other clergy accused of sexual abuse.

The list includes 10 priests and one deacon who have worked in the Northern State.

“I am repulsed and heartbroken by the evil acts perpetrated against innocent people by those in their care,” Soto wrote in a letter posted on the diocese’s website.

“As you read the list you will experience your own feelings of shock, anger and disgust. This will no doubt reopen wounds for some,” he wrote.

The list includes the names of the priests and one deacon charged, the churches and communities where they served, the years they served, the nature of the abuse, when the alleged abuse occurred and when the abuse occurred. abuse has been reported.

In some cases, the alleged abuses have lasted for decades.

John Dowling, who served as a priest in the diocese from 1947 to 1981, abused children under the age of 14 from 1954 to 1981, according to the diocese.

Dowling, who died in 2000, served at St. Joseph’s Church in Redding from 1958 to 1961, during part of the time the abuse was reported.

The abuse included sexual touching and fondling of four boys under the age of 14, the diocese said. Dowling was fired from the diocese in 1981 after receiving a report of child pornography, the diocese said.

A former Redding priest was sentenced in 2013 to eight years in prison for assaulting a teenage girl while serving in Sacramento and as an assistant pastor at Our Lady of Mercy Church in Redding.

The diocese said Uriel Ojeda was accused of sexually touching a woman under the age of 18 from 2007 to 2009.

Ojeda, who was arrested in November 2011, was criminally charged with lewd and lascivious acts with a teenage girl over a two-year period – beginning when she was 14 – in Sacramento and Shasta counties, according to the criminal complaint.

The diocese said it was releasing the list of names because Bishop Soto wanted to “confront the past and the heinous sins and crimes of sexual abuse that were part of it.”

The list includes 130 victims who were children and young adults.

Since 2002, the diocese has paid more than $50 million to settle 58 sexual abuse complaints, the diocese said. Of the money paid, the insurance covered about $16 million, and the diocese received another $5 million from religious orders.

While much abuse was reported in the 1980s and 1990s, the diocese did not establish a “zero tolerance” policy toward child abuse until 2002.

None of the priests on the list are active yet, the diocese said.

James Casey, who served as a priest at St. John the Evangelist Church in Dunsmuir from 1947 to 1963, was accused of sexually touching and fondling a boy under the age of 14 for an unspecified period in the 1950s, has indicated the diocese.

Casey retired in 1974 and died in 1992. The abuse was reported in 2011, the diocese said.

St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Redding

John Crowley was the only other priest on the list who worked in Redding. He was accused of touching and sexually fondling a girl under the age of 14 for an undetermined period from 1965 to 1985. He worked at St. Joseph’s Church in Redding from 1971 to 1976.

The diocese said he was removed from his post in 1988, the same year the incident was reported, the diocese said.

Three priests on the list – Vincent Brady, Malachy Conway and William Feeser – served at Red Bluff. Conway worked at Sacred Heart Church Red Bluff from 1996 to 1997. He is accused of being naked in front of minors and attempting to touch a boy in 1997. He was removed from his position in 1997, the year in which his actions were reported to the diocese. .

Feeser, now deceased, worked at Sacred Heart Church and Mercy High School in Red Bluff in 1999, the diocese said. He was charged with sexual touching, fondling, masturbation, oral copulation and sodomy with a girl under 14 in 1977 and 1978. This was reported in 2011. He retired in 2010 and is died in 2012.

He was also accused of touching and sexually fondling a boy under the age of 14 while working at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Carmichael. The abuse allegedly took place in 1977 and 1978, the diocese said. The incident with the boy was reported in 2016.

Brady allegedly committed sexual abuse from 1971 to 1979 when he worked at churches in Gridley, Vallejo and Sacramento. He worked at Sacred Heart Church in Red Bluff from 1981 to 1993, according to the diocese.

Brady is accused of rape, sexual touching, kissing and fondling girls under 18, including one under 14. These incidents were reported in 2000 and 2003, the diocese said. He was expelled from the ministry in 2002 and retired in 2004.

The three remaining priests allegedly committed abuses in Weed, Dunsmuir and Mount Shasta, according to the diocese.

  • William Hold worked as a priest at St. John the Evangelist Church in Dunsmuir and St. Joseph Church in McCloud from 1992 to 1994. His alleged crimes took place while he worked at churches in Sacramento and Woodland from 1976 to 1978. The diocese said he sexually touched, fondled and masturbated boys under the age of 14, the diocese said. He was removed from his post in 1998, the same year the incidents were reported.
  • John Hannon, who died in 2017, worked at Weed from 1996 to 1999. He allegedly abused a girl under 18 in 1977 while working in Sacramento. He was accused of having sex with the girl and touching her sexually, the diocese said.
  • Michael Dermody worked at Mount Shasta from 1962 to 1966 and McCloud from 1970 to 1974. He is accused of having sexual intercourse, oral copulation and fondling an 18 to 25 year old woman in 1988 and 1989 while working in Orland. He was removed from his position in 1989, the year the incident was reported.

A church deacon, Jesus Magallanes, worked at Anderson from 1995 to 1996.

  • He is accused of fondling, masturbation, digital penetration of a girl under 14 from 1975 to 1980, before working at Anderson. He was also accused of attempting to touch and commit other unspecified actions with a girl under the age of 14 during the period from 1975 to 1980. The abuse was reported in 1995 and he was was removed from office in 1996, the diocese said.
