Catholic bishops, under the auspices of the Nigerian Catholic Bishops’ Conference (CBCN), have called on the federal government to immediately release those detained for campaigning for sovereignty of part of Nigeria, alongside others arrested for denouncing perceived injustice and other wrongdoing.

However, the CBCN accused the government at all levels of being too distant from the people and not listening to their cries and demands, hence the growing tension and insecurity that threatens the existence of Nigerian businesses.

RCCS President Archbishop Augustine Akubueze, in his Christmas message, reminded the government that not everyone can agree with their policies or style of governance.

Archbishop Akubueze advised the federal government to be patient enough to listen to everyone, and also advised political office holders at all levels to act in the spirit of their constituents.

He said, “In order to listen, you have to admit that the other person has dignity and goodwill. No one should think that they have a monopoly on solving all the problems.

“To solve the insecurity problem in Nigeria, we have to listen to each other. If we want to resolve a turmoil or demand for devolution of power or sovereignty from part of the country, we have to listen to each other. We must resist the temptation to arrest and charge anyone who criticizes us. “

He, however, advised Catholic bishops and other faithful to use the occasion of Christmas to create a silent atmosphere where they can listen to the voice of God.

He said, “We must establish times of silence so that we can listen to God. Read
the Holy Scriptures, meditate on the passages and apply them to our lives. Parents must listen to their children, spouses must listen to each other.

“Bishops must listen to their priests and their collaborators. Priests and parishioners must listen to one another. We undoubtedly grow faster and better when we listen to one another because the Lord speaks to us through the good counsel of our neighbor.

He thus called for a prayer for the Holy Father, Pope Francis, for a Church that listens to God speak to her, through the clergy and the lay faithful.

He suggested, “As we plan to celebrate the Synod of Bishops in 2023 at the diocesan level, let us listen to members of the local Church as they speak about how the Church can best provide leadership through collaboration. of all.

“Unquestionably, God can speak to us through anyone, with or without formal education. So, let’s always say, like Samuel, ‘speaks Lord, your servant is listening.’
