A coalition of Catholic organizations will organize “24 hours for the climate”, a worldwide vigil for Catholics and believers to pray and advocate for the success of COP26. It will be broadcast live from St Aloysius Church in Glasgow from November 5 at 11am GMT until November 6 at 11am GMT.

“We are organizing this vigil because we know that vaccine inequity prevents everyone’s voice from being heard at COP26,” said James Trewby, justice and peace education worker for the Missionary Society of St Columban in Great Britain and coordinator of the coalition. “If we are to take care of our common home, we must listen and lead the cry of the earth and its most marginalized peoples. This vigil brings voices from all over the world to Glasgow in prayer and protest.”

The vigil will call on COP26 negotiators to agree to end all fossil fuel extraction by 2040, protect and restore ecosystems and financially support developing countries in their adaptation to climate change.

“The impact of the climate crisis on the countries of the South is a moral failure,” said Malka Doshi, communications manager for Don Bosco Green Alliance and member of the coalition. “It is a form of injustice that we have imposed on countries that have not contributed to the problem to the same extent as developed countries. as far as we can to protect these nations. “

The vigil will broadcast prayer experiences on the theme of ecological spirituality as well as stories from communities affected by climate change. Testimonies and prayer intentions will come from communities around the world, including the Philippines, Myanmar, Mexico, Chile, Tanzania, Ghana, United States and Scotland. Participants will also have several opportunities to share the impact of climate change on their lives and communities. These stories will then be delivered to COP26 negotiators.

“COP26 is meeting in Glasgow with the need to keep promises made in Paris six years ago,” said Daniel Sweeny, social justice coordinator for Justice and Peace Scotland (counselors to the Church’s Scottish Bishops’ Conference Catholic) and member of the coalition. “Communities across Scotland will be heard around the world, and more importantly, we will have the chance to hear and join in prayer with those who cannot be with us in person. line and pilgrim groups traveling to Glasgow are our most welcome guests; Tha Alba a ‘cur fàilte air an t-saoghal! “
