An organization of Catholic priests has said it will bless same-sex marriages, going against Vatican guidelines.
The Parish Priest Initiative said in a statement how it was “deeply appalled” by the recent Vatican decision and promised to “not reject any loving couple who ask to celebrate God’s blessing,” according to a Reuters report.
“We, members of the Parish Priest Initiative, are deeply appalled by the new Roman decree which seeks to ban blessing for same-sex couples. It is a relapse into a time that we hoped to have overcome with Pope Francis, â€they declared.
In 2013, the appointment of Pope Francis was seen as a positive step for LGBTQ + Catholics. However, upon examination, we found that his relatively progressive comments never included support for same-sex marriage.
Their statement continued, “We will not reject – in solidarity with so many – any loving couple from the future who ask to celebrate God’s blessing, which they experience every day, also in a worship service.”
The Parish Priest Initiative is a group based in Austria and is reportedly currently made up of 350 church leaders and 3,000 supporters. Their past campaigns have prompted priests to marry and allow women to become priests.
The statement comes after the Vatican issued a decree on March 15 that the Roman Catholic Church cannot bless same-sex unions and that recognizing them on an equal footing with heterosexual couples would be “wrong and misleading.”
This sparked outrage from the LGBTQ + community, including prominent figures like Elton John.
