HYDERABAD: At least 350 priests and nuns of the Catholic Church died from Covid-19 in the country during the second wave.
The majority of the deaths took place in April and May. Data available from Catholic associations revealed that the nine deceased Catholic priests came from different regions of the Dioceses of Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Vizag and Guntur in Andhra Pradesh. The Capuchin priest, Father Suresh Mathew, made the list.
Suresh Mathew said: “In 50 days the country has lost 350 Catholic priests and nuns to Covid-19. On Sunday, three priests and two nuns were added to the list. Unfortunately, in a few cases human error has resulted in death. Many died while in their active ministry. We have cases of sisters who were infected while on duty in the hospital. The priests who organized the funeral services for the Covid deaths have been infected. Many of our priests who work in remote parts of the country did not have access to better hospital care. If they had been in cities with better infrastructure, they would not have lost their lives ”,

He added: “They lived and died in rural areas. They worked among the poor who did not have access or could not afford multi-specialty hospitals.
“In a few cases, I know personally, they got infected for not being more careful. Many priests and religious are reluctant to wear masks, maintain social distancing, or use disinfectants while rendering service to the public. Most of them have not been vaccinated, ”added Father Suresh.
In Hyderabad, Bowenpally Golamari parish priest Inna Reddy died from Covid-19 on Sunday. According to the Archbishop of Hyderabad Poola Anthony, the funeral of G Inna Reddy took place in Gagillapuram. He apologized for the death of the priest.
The head of the Catholic Association of Hyderabad Royden Roch said: “Most of the deceased nuns and priests work either in hospitals or in educational establishments. A significant number of Jesuit priests who worked in colleges and schools died.
