The Kerala Council of Catholic Bishops has ordered all Catholic hospitals in the state to impose only “minimum fees” for COVID-19 treatment.

In a circular published here on Monday, the Council of Bishops, the supreme body of the Catholic hierarchy, as it called on church members to pray for God’s help in these difficult times, ordered hospitals to providing telemedicine consultation facilities and providing respective phone numbers to the public. The bishops also called on church authorities to coordinate activities against COVID-19 at all levels.

Diocesan committees should ensure that instruments such as the pulse oximeter, digital thermometer, steam inhaler, masks and disinfectants are made available to people on COVID-19 treatment in their own residences in subsidized tariffs.

The Catholic Sisters ‘Doctors’ Forum will provide a telemedicine consultation center through the coordinating committee for anti-COVID 19 activities, the bishops said.

They also called on everyone to adhere to social distancing standards, use disinfectants, wash their hands frequently and keep homes and surrounding areas clean. The bishops also called on church members to cooperate with, respect and assist health workers.

The bishops are also of the opinion that everyone should be vaccinated in turn and that they should engage in activities that would bring comfort to COVID-19 patients.

The KCBC Health Commission, the Kerala branch of the Catholic Indian Health Association, the Kerala Social Service Forum and the Catholic Sisters Doctors’ Forum are working together in the fight against the pandemic, the communication added.

These activities are carried out in collaboration with government agencies and according to their guidelines. Other activities will be undertaken in cooperation with institutions belonging to other religions.

Meanwhile, KCBC’s anti-pandemic activities are coordinated through a forum operating out of the Pastoral Orientation Center, POC, Palarivattam. The telephone numbers are: 9072822364, 9072822365, 9072822366.
