The Roman Catholic Bishop of Soroti Joseph Oliach Eciru advised members of the clergy to stop drinking alcohol.

Bishop Oliach launched this appeal yesterday during the commissioning of fifty catechists at the Church of St. Therese of the Child Jesus of the mission of Bukedea.

He said that many priests have taken binge drinking forgetting that they are church leaders who carry and serve the body and blood of Jesus Christ in church.

“The church is for the righteous who live as an example, I don’t see the reasons why a priest goes to the altar drunk, this should stop with immediate effect,” Bishop Oilach said.

The bishop also added that some of the priests have started to miss the church service due to hangovers and during the church service the priests are clearly drunk.

“In Roman Catholicism, a priest and Christians are representatives of Jesus Christ, so for a priest to enter the church while intoxicated is extremely bad, let’s stop drinking and serve God,” said Oliach .

Paul Khaukha, a trainer at the pastoral training school in Bukedea also condemned the act of such priests, saying that they should take seriously what the bishop told them because the spirit of drinking will not help them. .
